Title: May 10 — St. Damien of Molokai
Life of St. Damien of Molokai
St. Damien of Molokai, born Joseph de Veuster in 1840 in Belgium, dedicated his life to serving those afflicted by leprosy on the Hawaiian island of Molokai. After being ordained a priest, he volunteered for mission work, feeling called to minister to the isolated community of lepers who were cast away from society. With a heart full of compassion, he immersed himself in their sufferings, providing spiritual and physical care. St. Damien’s unwavering commitment and love for the marginalized transformed countless lives, making him a symbol of the Church’s call to love and serve the most needy. His legacy continues to inspire us to embrace those who are suffering and to be instruments of God’s love.
St. Damien’s life was marked by profound dedication to those often rejected by society. He faced immense challenges, including physical danger and emotional turmoil, yet his faith remained unshaken. By establishing a vibrant community among the lepers, he brought them hope and dignity, operating schools and churches where they could feel a sense of belonging. His courageous work transformed the island of Molokai into a place of refuge and brotherhood. After contracting leprosy himself, St. Damien continued to serve the community until his death in 1889. Canonized in 2009, he is known as the patron saint of those with leprosy and outcasts, exemplifying fidelity, selflessness, and the Gospel’s call to care for the forsaken.
