May 16 — Saint Simon Stock
Life of Saint Simon Stock
Saint Simon Stock, born in England around 1165, dedicated his life to the service of God from an early age. Known for his deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and his role as the fifth General of the Carmelite Order, Simon’s life is marked by mystical experiences and visions that profoundly shaped the Carmelite spirituality.
As a young man, Simon joined the hermitic community on Mount Carmel, where he became immersed in a life of prayer and contemplation. His leadership skills blossomed, and he was elected as the provincial superior, guiding the community throughout numerous challenges including periods of persecution. Simon is most celebrated for his vision of the Blessed Mother, who promised him the Brown Scapular — a sacramental that signifies Mary’s protection over those who wear it with faith. He passed away in 1265, leaving behind a legacy of devotion to Mary and strong spiritual leadership.
Simon was canonized in 1622, and his feast day is celebrated on May 16. His life inspires countless Catholics to foster a deep devotion to Mary and to commit to a life of service and purity.
