May 19 — Saint Celestine V
Life of Saint Celestine V
Born in 1215 in the kingdom of Naples, Pietro Angelerio, who would become known as Saint Celestine V, was a humble hermit and monk devoted to prayer and contemplation. He founded the Celestine Order of monks, emphasizing asceticism and solitude in pursuit of God. His life was marked by deep spiritual reflections and a commitment to living a life devoted to Christ.
In 1294, in an extraordinary turn of events, Celestine was elected pope against his will, becoming Pope Celestine V. He struggled with the weight of the papacy, experiencing a profound inner conflict between his desire for a simple life and his obligations as the leader of the Church. Just five months into his papacy, he chose to resign, becoming the first pope in history to voluntarily abdicate the papacy. The way he lived his life reflects deep humility, courage, and a profound connection to God. After his resignation, he lived in the hermitage where he had found peace, ultimately being canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 1313 for his exemplary virtue and piety.
