Saint Joseph Cafasso was born on January 15, 1811, in the town of Castelnuovo d’Asti, Italy. Joseph Cafasso’s early life was marked by a strong influence from his parents, who were devout farmers. He entered the seminary at an early age and was ordained a priest in 1833. After ordination, he joined the Society of St. Francis de Sales, where he became known for his remarkable ability to counsel those in distress. His commitment to the Sacrament of Reconciliation and his tender care for souls set him apart as a remarkable figure within the church.
He dedicated his life to the spiritual and material relief of the poor and marginalized, particularly focusing on those imprisoned for their crimes. Saint Joseph Cafasso’s particularly profound relationship with the incarcerated led him to advocate for their dignity, and he became a beloved figure among them.
His dedication culminated in the founding of an oratory in Turin, where he nurtured the spiritual lives of many, including the young Saint John Bosco. Joseph Cafasso passed away on June 23, 1860, and was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1947, recognized particularly for his virtues of compassion and guiding faith.
