His journey began when he joined the Franciscan order in 1730. After years of theological study and growth in holiness, he set sail for Mexico in 1749. Once there, his enthusiasm for spreading the word of God led him north to California, where he would leave a lasting legacy of faith. Blessed Junípero became known for his deep spirituality and resolve, often devoting himself to prayer and penance. He had a strong affection for the Native Americans, aiming to uplift their lives through education and religion.

Despite facing significant opposition, including political pushback and the challenging geographical landscape, Blessed Junípero established missions that became vital centers of spiritual life, education, and community. His first mission, Mission San Diego de Alcalá, laid the foundation for the others that followed. He meticulously learned the local languages, wrote catechisms, and taught the people about Christianity while advocating for their rights and dignity.

His health declined over the years, yet his spirit remained unbroken. Blessed Junípero Serra died on August 28, 1784, at Mission San Carlos Borromeo, leaving a legacy that extends to this day as he is remembered for his virtues of love, perseverance, and faith. Eventually, he was beatified by Pope Francis on September 23, 2015, recognizing his dedication and the impact of his work.
