May 2 — Saint Oliver Plunkett
Life of Saint Oliver Plunkett
Saint Oliver Plunkett was born on November 24, 1625, in County Meath, Ireland. A brilliant scholar, he studied at the Irish College in Rome and was later ordained a priest. He became the Archbishop of Armagh in 1669 during a tumultuous time for Catholics in Ireland. For his faithfulness and dedication to the Church, he worked tirelessly to promote the Catholic faith among his flock.
Plunkett faced severe persecution due to the Penal Laws against Catholics in Ireland. He was steadfast in his commitment to the faith, and in 1679, he was unjustly accused of conspiracy and treason by the English authorities. Despite being imprisoned and mistreated, Saint Oliver remained resolute, embracing his fate as a martyr for Christ. He was sentenced to death and was executed on July 1, 1681, in Tyburn, London, becoming the first saintly martyr of Ireland in over three centuries. His unwavering faith, courage, and strength in the face of adversity have made him a beacon of hope and inspiration for Catholics around the world.
